On Friday, 28th February 2020, Child Space Uganda held an outreach to Murchison Bay Primary School in Luzira Prisons to talk about climate change with pupils.
We were joined by the East Africa Climate Change and Energy Lead from the British High Commission.
At the outreach, we shared with the pupils about the human causes of climate change and how climate change affects our communities. We then called the pupils to action by sharing with them some of the ways in which children can play a role in curbing climate change, for instance; speaking up and rising the issue with their leaders, planting trees, sharing the knowledge they have learnt about climate change with their peers and parents, and practicing proper disposal of plastic waste, among other things.
‘Everyone, everywhere must play a role in fighting climate change. Climate change is not only a Ugandan problem, or a British problem, or a problem specific to any country or people. Neither is it just an adults problem, or a children’s problem, climate change concerns all of us and we all have to play a role. We need the collective effort of everyone’ This was the key message of the Climate Change and Energy Lead from British High Commission in his summary speech to the children.
We later on planted trees around the schools as an example of one of the things that children should emulate and practice to help curb climate change.
We would like to thank the amazing pupils of Murchison Bay Primary schools for their interest and enthusiasm on the topic.
We thank the Head Teacher and Staff of Murchison Bay Primary School for their support in making this possible.
We also thank the East Africa Climate Change and Energy Lead from (BHC) for making time to join our outreach and encouraging the pupils on collective action for climate change.
Finally,we thank the Education and Social Service Department at KCCA and Uganda Prisons Service for their support in helping us get to the school.
Together, we are all working towards creating a better planet for both today’s and future generations. It is time to Action on Climate Change Now and at Child Space Uganda, ‘we are right at it’.
